Be constantly alert!

I think the heart of the challenge for intelligent, inquiring folk, who are driven by their very nature to question and probe, and thus probably can't and should't fight their own DNA, is to constantly be alert to the sometimes subtle differences between being a skeptic and a cynic. For at least the last dozen years, perhaps since the dawn of fatherhood, I've often thought of myself as a recovering cynic who's now happy being a skeptic, an entirely healthier state of being. But like that alcoholic who can never relax lest he revert to old paths, the corrosive attractions of cynicism (the mirror opposite of hope and faith, and something of an occupational hazard for anyone steeped in the customs and folklore of journalism) always beckon.
