I have often drawn parallels between the colonisation of the United States and the development of the internet. It does feel as if we are colonising a new space and one of the reasons I got into blogging was to try to make it the sort of space that my children could inhabit.
There is a fascinating and really well made programme, part of the Seven Wonders Of The Industrial World series, on the TV at the moment about the building of the US trans-continental railway.
What is interesting is that the enterprise was driven by the vision and greed of the men involved but was funded by the US Government in the form of land grants. It is also fascinating that the venture brought about the violent overthrow of the original indian communities who inhabited the vast areas crossed.
