Don't get me wrong. I can appreciate the excitement of extremes of human endeavour and find some of the individual achievements awesome but I have to confess to having little interest in the Olympics. I am just not that excited by sport and find some of it frankly silly.
In fact I would go further than that. Having just listened to people I know screaming support for Great Britain at their television sets, clearly seeing it as a battle between "our" nation and the others and using some extremely aggressive language, I actually find it disturbing.
Does this sporting focus give vent to nationalistic feelings which might be more harmfully expressed otherwise or does it foster those feelings of difference making it more likely that they will fuel more serious differences in different arena?
