I was in two minds whether or not to post a rather cynical view I have held for some time about management which just came up in IM conversation with a friend and had decided not to when someone arrived at my blog having searched for Principle Of Least Action so maybe I will post it after all:

If you are a manager, - the more senior the better and especially if you have just been appointed - then you have to be seen to do something. You have to be seen as having brought about change. Even if you fuck things up this is better than finding the status quo acceptable as this would be seen as complacent.
