Many moons ago I was Duty Manager at the BBC World Service. The job entailed dealing with anything that fell outside anyone else's job description or happened out of hours and as a consequence we had to deal with all sorts of unforeseen, unpleasant and sometimes even dangerous situations. One of the things I learned early on was that, even though it felt counter intuitive it was better to wait an hour or so before doing anything. Almost invariably things started to sort themselves out and not seem as bad as they had in the beginning and even if I did have to intervene I could do so on the basis of more information and calmer reflection.
The next time something like this happens maybe the blogosphere could learn to do the same thing.
