BG, Ryanair, JP Morgan and Disco Dads

There has been a rash of Twitter “events” recently in which senior executives have been thrust out in front of their organisations for grandstanding occasions on Twitter, with predictable results.

You have to wonder who was advising them. It would appear that a lot of PR, Communications and Marketing people just don’t get the social web. They still think of it as a channel. They don’t understand the power of real relationships. They don’t take the time to learn the ropes and become truly a part of the networks.

In my book I describe watching this sort of fiasco as being like watching your dad dancing at a disco. You’re sort of proud of him for having a go but really rather wish that he’s sit down.
